Growler is our new, highly versatile transom-stern cruising canoe, and big sister to our popular and highly acclaimed 12 ft. solo canoe, Newt. Growler is based on the same hull form as Newt, but is capable of carrying considerably larger loads, including up to 3 passengers.
Growler displays excellent performance with canoe paddles, and also oars, with a small skeg added to the stern for superior tracking while rowing. And, for extended cruising, she features a transom for mounting a small electric or gasoline outboard motor.
SAILING RIG: Included with Growler plans are drawings and specifications for a 30 sq. ft. sailing rig, including sail, spars, rudder and leeboard. The modest sized sail provides plenty of fun and action while taking stability and crew safety into consideration. Cautionary Note: Keep in mind that sailing canoes and kayaks and other narrow boats is not recommended for beginning sailors, and you absolutely must wear a PFD at all times while doing so. That being said, canoe and kayak sailing can be some of the most fun you can have on the water.
Construction is simple and straightforward, with building techniques focused toward the builder with minimal woodworking experience and only basic tools. The hull is constructed from 3 sheets of 1/4” or 6mm plywood, and all the rest of the structural components are gotten from common lumberyard materials.
The plans include detailed large-scale drawings for all assemblies, and a comprehensive booklet of construction notes that describe all components and building procedures and are number-keyed to the corresponding parts and assemblies in the drawings. No lofting is required.
